Koi or Nishikigoi from the common carp (Cyprinus Carpio). **About** 187 years or so ago some koi were found in with common carp that were normally raised for food. These weren't koi as we know them today they were more like common carp with some red color on them. It was from these common carp that had some red color that the first Japanese koi varieties were started from. Asagi and Bekko were some of the first stabilized varieties. It was around 1830 that these stabilized varieties were well known in Nagaoka, Niigata, Japan and some of the surrounding areas. Meaning of Koi (Japanese word for carp) Meaning of Nishikigoi (Japanese word for "brocaded" carp) The Japanese produce the best koi in the world with sharp color and interesting patterns.
